Parents and carers are urged to take their child's hand tomorrow and walk them to school for Walk Safely to School Day.
The Pedestrian Council of Australia annual event has the bumper aim of combating childhood obesity and reducing traffic hazards around schools.
It also aims to ease climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging carers to leave the car at home.
Sandra Furney walks son Harry,11, to school each day and says the almost one-kilometre walk gets them to school faster than it would take to drive.
Harry, who attends Dubbo West Public School, said it helped him to stay healthy.
Sue Buttrey who organised the event at the school said next year they would consider hosting a "healthy breakfast" to further encourage children to adopt healthy habits.
More than 8000 schools are expected to participate in the walk Australia-wide.
An RTA trial of a "lollipop" with flashing red lights was also being trialled at the school crossing yesterday afternoon, in a bid to make school areas safer for children.
