Publicans committed to keeping their venues safe

21 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
Dubbo publicans have recommitted to plastic cups and shots bans, despite the NSW Government announcing its restrictions will be lifted on December 1.

The Pastoral Hotel licensee manager Greg Pilon and The Commercial Hotel licensee Rod Leonard say their establishments will continue to operate in the same manner as they have for the past year, when those measures were mandatory.

Numbers of assaults fell at Dubbo hotels in the past year, pulling them out of the Government’s bad books.

The two publicans say they’ll continue to abide by their voluntary restrictions, as part of a Dubbo Liquor Accord agreement.

Mr Leonard said the Commercial had turned itself around in the past year.

“We’ve come a long way. It’s a good reward for what we’ve been doing,” he said in response to the news.

Mr Leonard said the hotel had hosted big crowds in the time and still achieved the better result.

Patrons could still expect no shots, no drinks with greater than 5 per cent alcohol content and the 1am curfew, he said.

Down the road at the Pastoral it was the same story.

Mr Pilon said the result showed that Dubbo’s police and licensees worked together.

“Every other provincial city still have venues on the list,” he said.

Mr Pilon said Dubbo publicans would be working hard to avoid the list again because of the stigma attached to it.

“In Dubbo nothing changes,” he said.

“Our voluntarily conditions are tougher than level two restrictions.”

Of the 48 violent venues under special restrictions last year, 25 were removed from the list because their assault rates fell below the threshold, the government said.

Making us drink out of plastic cups will not make it safer, just make your beer taste awful.

Responsible service of alcohol needs to be applied before people are drunk and violent. People need to also become happy, not angry when they drink.
