But the teen is now one step closer to reaching his dream - to become a car salesman - after wrapping up a 12-week work experience stint with a local car dealership yesterday.

With the help of his itinerant support teacher in hearing Leah Graham, Luke has spent two hours each week lending a hand in the Golden West Holden detailing and yard preparation department, helping clean cars pre-delivery.

The Dubbo College Delroy Campus Year 9 student, who has a moderate-to-severe hearing impairment among other

disabilities, has already started to plan a future in the car industry.

"When I'm in Year 12, I'll come back here," he beamed when presented with a pile of farewell gifts from Holden yesterday.

Ms Graham said the work experience was a move to get special education and hearing impaired kids "out and about", giving them the chance to develop their social skills and work ethic, and boost their chances of employment when they're older.

"He has a huge interest in cars and by doing this he could find something he likes that he might aim towards," she said.

The local Holden team took the youngster under their wing three months ago to "give the young fellow some more opportunities" and expose him to working life.

General sales manager Greg Brimble said staff looked forward to Luke dropping by the dealership each week.

"He's just a good young boy who's had it pretty hard because of his disability, and he's going to continue to have it hard," Mr Brimble said.

"He's a beaut kid, fantastic to have around, so keen and enthusiastic."

Although Luke's time at the car dealership will not extend into next term, Mr Brimble said he would consider taking on another local teenager facing a similar situation to Luke further down the track.

Mr Brimble added that he hoped Luke would continue to seek work experience in years to come and other businesses would jump on board and help support the program.
