“Fashion is part of the historic success behind Derby Day,” he said.
Each year, trends evolve and resurface, but headwear is a must, according to experts.
“Fascinators are now on steroids and they’ve grown and they’ve grown into hats,” Melbourne milliner Kim Fletcher said.
But there’s no need to be overwhelmed, she said, beginners can always start with small pieces.
The word from Australia’s fashion capital, Melbourne, is that 1960’s Mad Men style will be in vogue this year - full and figure-hugging skirts with nipped waists.
In regard to shoes, comfort is the go this year with the constant threat of rain looming.
As for the men, Myer Fashion on the Field ambassador Nick Holland said they certainly shouldn’t be left out of the fashion stakes.
Trilby hats are popular for the blokes, as are skinny tailored suits and ties.
It’s definitely worthwhile to dress up for this once-a-year event, Mr Day said.
“There will be $1500 up for grabs for the best dressed on the field.”
