Mr McKenna arrived at the hotel shortly after 10pm to have a drink with a number of police who he had worked with when he was approached by Cobby.
Cobby asked Mr McKenna if he was the commander of the district before asking him if he had attended the funeral.
Mr McKenna told Cobby he didn't know the man, saying "I never met him and never worked with him".
"That's pretty p--s weak don't you think?," Cobby told McKenna who asked what he was talking about.
According to court documents, Mr McKenna noticed Cobby's demeanour change, and became confrontational and aggressive as he spoke.
"A bloke works for you command for 30 years and you can't even go to his funeral," Cobby said to Mr McKenna.
Mr McKenna responded by telling him, "he didn't work for me mate and what would you have me do, go to every ex-cops funeral, whom I haven't met across the state?".
Cobby said "yes" when Mr McKenna told him to "wake up to himself" and and to "have a good night".
As Mr McKenna went to walk away, Cobby shouted "you're weak as p--s you c--t".
"Les, just f--k off and leave me alone," Mr McKenna responded.
Cobby was holding a Bilpin Cider bottle when he moved toward Mr McKenna stopping short of headbutting him, court documents state.
Mr McKenna then pushed him away with one hand to create a distance between the two, which caused Cobby to stumble back.
CCTV footage captured the incident, and shows Cobby immediately approaching Mr McKenna and grabbing him around the throat forcing him backwards.
Mr McKenna was then struck by the glass cider bottle on the forehead between his eyes, and landed on the ground with Cobby on top of him.
As Cobby was arrested, he told police Mr McKenna "pushed me", and "you know the bloke you work with is a f--ing c--k head".
Mr McKenna was admitted to Dubbo hospital and placed under general aesthetic so his wound could be cleaned and closed.
Court documents said he required 10 stiches and would have a "significant scar" on the middle of his forehead.
In Dubbo Local Court on Thursday, defence lawyer Jai Silkman requested the case be adjourned to obtain a psychological report.
Magistrate Gary Wilson also requested a sentencing assessment report.
Cobby will return to court for sentence on February 24.
Mr McKenna is now the assistant commissioner and serves at the Northern Regional Commander in Newcastle.
