Trained at Dubbo by John Lew and driven by John O'Shea, All Spruced Up ($23) started from barrier three in the first of four 1730m heats on the night.

While she started well, it was Cashbox ($51) and Why Not Surf ($5.50) that got away to the better starts, as they battled for second place.

But as the runners entered the final lap, All Spruced Up ($23) powered to the front to take the lead and she never looked back, coming home with a wet sail to win by 12 metres ahead of Hes Sweet ($9.50) in second and Why Not Surf taking the third and final placing.

Lew was delighted with the win, having seen All Spruced Up get back to better form last start when running third after a run of five races without a placing.

"I was very pleased, it was a great drive," Lew said.

"She's had a bit of ordinary form but I took her to West Wyalong a few weeks ago and she ran a real big race down, their big meeting.

"I thought she'd go alright but in Bathurst, you've got a lot of stronger company."

Wednesday was the five-year-old mare's first start in Bathurst since a ninth place on September 22, which was the last time O'Shea had the drive for her.

It was also the mare's first win at Bathurst since June 23, when O'Shea had the drive as well, and it was her fourth win at the local track, her most successful venue.

Race favourite Captain Oh Captain ($1.95), who was trained and driven by Amanda Turnbull, fell back to finish in fifth place.

It's the five-year-old's seventh career win in 32 starts, with her last coming at Dubbo back on July 9, the last of a three-race winning run.

In the other Bathurst RSL Soldiers Saddle heats, Bernie Hewitt claimed victory in the second heat with Beta Jewel, the Peter Russo-trained Roll Out took honours in the third heat and the Peter Trevor-Jones-trained Standandeliver won the fourth and final heat.
