But there was much more to the story as a photo was needed to decide a thrilling Kennards Hire F&m Maiden Plate (1000m).

The Gary Portelli-trained Premosphere ($1.30) was all the rage in the lead-up to the event, having scored two seconds in four career starts.

Ridden by jockey Brodie Loy, Premosphere jumped out to an early lead and everything seemed to point to a comfortable first win.

But seemingly out of nowhere, Miss Capella ($19) and jockey Shaun Guymer made their move.

From the back of the track, the long-shot bolted up the outside for a gripping finish too close to call on first viewing.

Hearts were in mouths to see whether the heavily back favourite had claimed victory, and after a photo finish it was confirmed that Premosphere got the win.

"About from the six to the four (hundred) we got taken on a bit, put the pressure on," Loy told Sky Thoroughbred Central after the nervy finish.

"She toughed it out quite well under the circumstances.

"They took us on early and then they all died off at the 400, so she was left alone a long way from home (and it was) just a little bit wayward."

Running in third was Em Cee Gee ($10).

It was all about the favourites early on at Orange, as Premosphere's win was sandwiched by victories for Will To Excel ($3.50) and Coal Crusher ($1.30) while Smuggler's Bay ($1.85) won the fourth event of the day.

Trainer James Ponsonby combined with leading Cowra jockey Mathew Cahill to win Southern Cross Austereo Benchmark 58 Handicap (2100m) with Will To Excel

"Matthew (Cahill) was just able to give him such a great in behind them without having to do too much work and I think the way the race was run, it just suited him," Ponsonby said.
