The emergence of young stars such as Kaylee McKeown, Rohan Browning and Jessica Fox will no doubt have inspired the next generation of Australian Olympians.

Dubbo Athletics Club's Steve Gamble believes the recent showing in both the track and field will lead to a spike in new athletes in Dubbo.

Every time the Olympics is on, it pushes children into sports they have seen at the Games.

"Every four years you see a big spike in sport," he said.

"Particularly in junior sport and having some from Australia in the 100 metres is great.

"Everybody talks about the 100 metre and that's the flagship type event at the Olympics. To have an Australian perform like [Browning] will definitely be good for us at Dubbo Athletics and all sports as well."

Browning shocked many after his first 100 metre heat at the Games running 10.01 which was faster than Jamaican veteran Yohan Blake who was formerly the second quickest man on the planet behind only Usain Bolt.

Unfortunately, a slow start in Browning's semi-final meant the Australian did not make it into the final of the event but Gamble knows the performance he displayed was not fully unexpected.

"He's been making some noise of the last six months in Australia and probably hasn't got a lot of media from it," he said.

"I had a feeling he was going to perform quite well in his heats but didn't expect him to beat Yohan Blake.

"In all honesty, I thought he was going to run really close to that 10 flat but he definitely raised some eyebrows."

Overall, Gamble said Australia's athletes had already exceeded expectation.

"I think it has been a long time building to the level that we have had," he said.

"I think we have been a bit more fortunate than some of the European countries with lockdowns and things like that.

"We've been able to train a lot more freely and obviously we have some outstanding talent coming through the ranks."
