He became angry and went into the master bedroom and searched for the keys, but was unsuccessful and began to repeatedly punch the bedroom door.
Settree left the bedroom and punched the glass panel within the front door of the house, causing it to smash before leaving the home.
According to police the bedroom door was completely destroyed from the door handle up.
About 9.25pm that night, Settree attended Dubbo Police Station where he was arrested.
In Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday, Settree pleaded guilty to destroy or damage property.
Defence lawyer Corey Suckling said it was Settree's first time before the court, and he had been a person of good character outside this incident.
He said Settree had been going through "trying times of late" as his parents had been separating.
"It's a trying time at any stage at life, but partially entering adulthood," Mr Suckling said.
"He has since apologised to his mother, quite shortly after the incident, and agreed to cover the costs of any repairs as need be.
Magistrate Theresa Hamilton recognised Settree's lack of criminal history, and out of character behaviour which was highlighted in character references.
Settree was sentenced to a 12-month conditional release order.
