PRODUCERS in the state's Far West are being urged to be on high alert by the NSW Rural Crime Prevention team after the recent theft of goats.

The Bourke Rural Crime Prevention Team and Central North Police District investigators are looking into the theft of a herd of between 600 and 2000 mix-sexed goats from a remote property between Bourke and Tibooburra.
The goats are believed to have been taken from the property on Wanaaring Road, Wanaaring, some time between April 24 and July 14 this year.

Police said the person responsible for the property identified a cut padlock on a boundary fence, before discovering the large number of goats had been stolen.
The incident comes as goat prices have reached new highs in recent months.
In March, Meat and Livestock Australia released a report which revealed goat prices were ranging from 750c/kg to 920c/kg and were averaging 815c/kg.
