The Demons' Dylan Fairall felt it was a tough game to visit Orange in the middle of winter but was pleased his side came away with 9.6.60 to 5.5.35 win.
"The ground conditions were pretty boggy over there so scoring wasn't probably the easiest," he said.
"However, we kicked relatively straight with 9 goals, 6 [behinds] which a good result from the conditions."
Any sporting team travelling to Orange must brave the conditions and Fairall felt the side was not overpowered by the home side.
"Given the conditions, it was a lot more contested footy," he said.
"Which was good, I thought our team did well considering Orange have some good inside midfielders.
"It was a tough game and the scoreline probably isn't reflective of how close the game actually was."
The Demons welcomed back several players but it was a new player who stood out for Fairall.
"Tom Burns had another great game, in just his second game for the club," he said.

"It was good to have Matt Purse back in the side who came back from injury and he really gave us some structure down back."
Awaiting the Demons this week may be their biggest challenge yet when they host the ladder leader Bathurst Giants who are coming off a win against rivals the Bushrangers on Saturday.
"There was plenty of positives to take out of the game and this week we have the Giants who are on top of the ladder in Dubbo," Fairall said.
"It's going to be a big challenge and it will allow us to see where we are at as a club.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity to take on the ladder leaders and test ourselves against them."
The Women's side went down in a close game also to Orange 3.2.20 to 2.3.15 which is just Dubbo's third loss for the season.
The Men's Tier 2 side travelled to Parkes for a rare nighttime game but were outmatched against a clinical Panthers side who came away the winners 9.16.70 to 1.2.8.
