The fair will be held at the Western Plains Cultural Centre on August 6 to 8.

Artists are encouraged to register for a free exhibition space, and Dubbo Regional Council is also on the hunt for musicians who will be paid to play during the event.

Cultural development coordinator Jessica Moore said it was the first time anything like the Dubbo Art Fair had been held. She said the idea was developed based on public feedback when council's cultural plan was being developed last year.

"In Dubbo, we don't have any places for people to sell art, we don't have any permanent commercial galleries," Ms Moore said.

"Because we've got a bit of a gap in programming here at the cultural centre, where we're doing repairs and painting to the walls, we thought in the weekend leading up to that there was an opportunity to try something new and experiment with this new model to see if it works."

Ms Moore said the fair was a "double whammy". It will not only give artists the chance to build relationships with clients, it will also give members of the community a chance to purchase original art work.

"We really would love to show people that buying original artworks, and buying original creative works, and going to see original songwriters and musicians is so important because originality is where innovation comes from and where growth comes from," Ms Moore said.

"Really supporting original artworks and buying one for your homes is an amazing celebration of your community and the people who live and work here, but it's also doing an immense amount to support economic growth in the region as well. It isn't just a feel good thing."

The fair is open to artists in the local government area, and the adjoining regions.

"One of the great things of the cultural plan was that we talked about regional development - as Dubbo grows the region grows. We want to be inclusive and welcoming to people who want to have a shot as well," Ms Moore said.

The fair has only just been announced but the cultural development coordinator said there had already been strong interest.

"It's really tapped a nerve which has been great," Ms Moore said.

"We've had a handful of people already say they want a stall. And we want people to really let us know so they can secure a booth because the ways things are going it's going to be a full house."

An exhibition booth includes a two metre by two metre allocation, a clearly defined space with one wall to hang on, advice from staff on display and setup and standard vinyl signage on the booth wall.

Artists need to register their interest via the WPCC website by Monday, July 5.
