A man has been charged with glassing incoming assistant police commissioner Peter McKenna in a bloody altercation at a pub in Dubbo.

Emergency services were called to the licenced premises on Brisbane Street just after 11pm on Friday, after reports an off-duty police officer had been glassed in the face.
"The injured man had been treated at scene before he was taken to Dubbo Hospital," A NSW police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said a 45-year-old man was arrested and taken to Dubbo Police Station, where he was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Superintendent McKenna underwent surgery at Dubbo Hospital to repair a wound to his face on Saturday afternoon following the violent confrontation.
It's believed the incident occurred while police were gathering following the funeral of an ex-police officer, who died after a battle with post traumatic stress disorder.
The incident occurred just days after Superintendent McKenna was promoted to assistant commissioner for the northern region.
The 45-year-old man appeared in Dubbo Local Court on Saturday, and the matter will return to court later this month.
Commander for the western region, assistant commissioner Geoff McKechnie said Superintendent McKenna was recovering well.
"Superintendent Peter McKenna is receiving ongoing care and looks forward to resuming duties at the appropriate time," he said.
