The Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Hugh McDowell said the snowfall was the result of a strong cold front that passed through the region, as well as large parts of the state, the day before.
Snow was likely to keep falling down over parts of the region which are 800 meters above sea level, including Orange, until Thursday.

The snow level would then come up higher to the 1100-metre-level on Friday, with conditions beginning to warm into the weekend. Showers would also start easing off, Mr McDowell said.
"Orange is not likely to see snow after Friday. [There will be] more snow-showers today [Wednesday], more snow-showers Thursday, [then] mostly warming up a a little bit on Friday," he said.
"Then probably mostly dry and settled over the weekend."
With heavy snowy conditions expected to continue for Orange as well as the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Oberon and Bathurst regions, Transport for NSW is warning motorists to be prepared for changed traffic conditions.
"Motorists in these regions are advised to delay travel unless necessary, check the road conditions before travelling, take additional caution and drive to the conditions," a department spokesperson said.
"Snow and black ice create additional road hazards and motorists should reduce speed, limit braking, use daytime driving lights and keep an increased distance between cars in front.
"Snow clearing equipment is placed at key locations and staff in the field will continually monitor traffic conditions.
"Transport for NSW crews will carry out salt spreading to reduce the likelihood of black ice forming. Portable and permanent signs will also be used to provide motorists with real time traffic information."
On Wednesday morning, Cabonne Council closed access roads to Mount Canobolas after the SES deemed it unsafe for regular traffic.
Conditions will be reassessed at 4pm this afternoon, council said.
