Cr Jones was elected as deputy at the mayoral election on Thursday. Councillor Stephen Lawrence was elected as mayor.
It's the first time in two years that a Wellington councillor has held one of the leadership roles.
For Cr Jones, having a Wellington representative as either mayor or deputy is "very important" for the town.
"When we were first elected the Wellington community really wanted to see someone from Wellington be it councillor [David] Grant or myself - once the two positions had actually been declared - to be either the mayor or deputy," she said.
"It's all about, and was and is still about, trying to integrate the two communities. Wellington still feels as if it's the poor cousin and we've been trying really hard to explain to them that it's not the case and that's why I put my hand up again as deputy."
Cr Jones said she had been on local government for 26 years and it was her desire to serve the community, be it the Wellington Shire or Dubbo Regional areas.

During her speech after the election, she said it was time for the council to "turn the page" and be united.
"I think it's important that we rebuild the trust and the confidence that the community previously had for this council and we demonstrate by our actions that we will deliver," she said.
"There is only one team in my mind and that team is called community. No other team exists for me."
Cr Lawrence said he would be leaning on the councillors, including Cr Jones, during his three months as mayor.
"I don't think that between the nine councillors there actually are divisions to heal. I think we're all committed to moving forward in a positive and community-focused way," Cr Lawrence said.
Cr Jones is hoping to see her time on council continue. After receiving "quite a number of phone calls and emails from residents", she said she would be standing in the Wellington ward again at the upcoming election.
"I truly believe we need to rebuild Wellington's stability," she said.
"Some of this that has been going on for the last couple of months has not been good for the whole Dubbo Regional Council area. Wellington has been on the receiving end of that."
