Residents will be able undergo a free 10-minute heart health test conducted by the nurses from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Heart Health Check Tour during its visit to town.

Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Heart Health Check service manager Jayne Baric said coronary heart disease is killing more Australians than any other single disease and it is 'largely' preventable.

"COVID-19 has exacerbated some of the risk factors associated with heart disease such as weight gain and reduced physical activity," she said.

"Now more than ever there is a need for Australians to get checked. This simple test will only take about 10 minutes but it could save your life.

The heart health check involves measuring the three key modifiable risk factors that contribute to heart disease: blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. If needed, a recommendation for either a GP or hospital visit is given.

According to the institution the visit follows on from recent news the region tops the state for the highest rates of obesity.

The institution released statistics which reveals 44.4 per cent of people living in NSW Far West and Orana region are obese, compared to the national average of 33 per cent.

It also has above national average smoking rates.

It also estimated 57,000 Australians suffered a heart attack last year - that's around one every ten minutes.

Institute professor Jamie Vandenberg will also be available to answer questions during a morning tea.

The tests will run on Thursday, May 20 from 10am to 1pm at the Pastoral Hotel Function Centre, open to anyone interested.
