The Forbes Magpies left their charge far too late on Sunday afternoon as the Wellington Cowboys started the 2021 Group 11 season with an impressive win on the road.
Wellington, the 2019 premiers, scored a 30-12 win at Spooner Oval after shooting out to a 20-0 lead early in the second half.
The Magpies showed some fight late on but it was too little, too late and it was that bit more painful for beaten coach Cameron Greenhalgh given he's spent much of pre-season talking about the need to start matches well.
"We turned over too much football and that's one thing you can't do is give Wellington too much footy," Forbes coach Cameron Greenhalgh said.
"We also spoke about starting fast and we didn't, they got the jump on us."
Winger CJ Ralph opened the scoring the Cowboys early on and that kicked-off a period of dominance for the visitors.
Star fullback Will Lousick scored a double in what was a convincing win for the Justin Toomey-White-led side.
Forbes had been put on the back foot early after fullback and NSW Country representative Mitch Andrews suffered an injury in the warm-up.
Wellington meets CYMS next round while Forbes takes on a Nyngan side which enjoyed the bye in round one.
