Leaving Jackson-The Johnny Cash and June Carter Show is a live concert production based on the performances of Johnny Cash, also exploring the love-story or Cash and Cater through some of the "greatest songs ever written".
The late Cash and wife Carter met at the Grand Ole Opry in 1956 during a backstage introduction where Cash declared his fondness of Carter, telling her that he grew up watching her performing with her family and had a desire of meeting her one day.
According to Carter, it was love at first sight, but both having been bound to other spouses at the time, their relationship began first just as two artists working together.
Carter began touring with Cash regularly as a backup singer, duet partner, and entertainer in the 60s- which was around the time Cash had notoriously struggled with drug addiction.
Carter famously told Rolling Stones Magazine years later, "It was not a convenient time for me to fall in love with him, and it wasn't a convenient time for him to fall in love with me".
"I was frightened of his way of life. I thought I can't fall in love with this man, but it's just like a ring of fire."
And it was that same knowing that cave Carter the inspiration behind one of Cash's biggest hit songs 'Ring of Fire' which was originally released as a single by Carter's sister Anita before being recorded by Cash in 1963.
The duo married in 1968 and remained married until Carter passed away in May of 2003.
Cash passed away shortly after in September of 2003. Now, their story is being relieved over a two-hour show by performers Jeff Carter as Cash and Brooke McMullen as Carter.
Jeff Carter says the show he and McMullen aren't aiming to perfectly replicate Cash and Carter, as the idea of the show was to have fun and perform a younger take on the famous couple.
"We don't think we are Johnny and June. We just do our best version of the songs. After all, it's entertainment," he said.
Leaving Jackson will run at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre on Saturday, June 26, from 7.30 pm.
