Those desperate to find vacant properties for rent took to the Facebook group Dubbo Rentals to seek out availabilities.

After posting to the page they were contacted by accounts they now believe to be fake claiming to have an available property.

In multiple cases they were then provided with a real residential address and a tour video of the inside of an unknown house.

Kim Swaffield said she was one of the people contacted by an account going by the name Ray.

"I posted on the 'Dubbo Rentals' Facebook group asking if there were any suitable houses for my kids and me and shortly after a Ray sent me a message," she said.

The unknown person provided Miss Swaffield with a real Dubbo address, a video of a house and informed her she would receive the house keys after paying $1500 bond plus two weeks rent which amounted to an extra $700.

"It made me extremely angry," she said.

"I am desperate for a rental for my kids and me. I am a single mother which I had stated in my initial post, so it makes me furious that there's people out there willing to scam people in vulnerable situations."

Dubbo resident Andrew Williamson was also contacted by an account he believes to be fake, this one going by the name Susan.

"When I asked to look inside she told me I couldn't and I was to pay the bond before she sent me keys," he said.

The person behind the account gave Mr Williamson a real Dubbo address, claiming the rent would be $350 per week and the bond $1400.

The scammer proceeded to ask Mr Williamson for his full name, moving in and out date, email, current address, a copy of his ID and his occupation claiming they would then mail the house keys to him overnight and provide him with a tracking number.

Mr Williamson said he drove past the address provided to find the door was open and the house was already occupied.

Several other warnings were also posted to the Dubbo Rentals page also exposing other accounts going by Florin and Hannah.

The admins of the Facebook page have since made changes to prevent accounts that are perceived to be fake from getting in contact with those who are honestly seeking out rentals.
