The cafe was broken into in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Dubbo mayor Ben Shields said thousands of dollars worth of damage had been done to the cafe, and items such as an iPad and confectionary had been stolen.

"It's more of a vandalism than it is a robbery. They've gotten nothing of real value because the point of sale iPad they have, it can't be used anywhere else. They're people who clearly haven't got a clue what they're doing deciding to be nasty for the hell of it," he said.

"It's a lot of cost to the community and very little gain to them. They're clearly just as big imbeciles as they are criminals."

The cafe was opened in June last year as part of the adventure playground.

"It's disappointing because I'm personally very proud of the adventure playground up there. It's been built and constructed on my watch as mayor. It's one of the more popular facilities of the new council and to see some animals go through and just tear the place apart because they can is extremely disappointing," Cr Shields said.

The mayor is encouraging anyone with information to contact the police.

A $2500 reward is on offer for information that leads to the conviction of a person who has committed wilful damage or theft.

"I'd like to see the person, people or animals who did this busted and made to pay for the damage and also go through the legal system and get as harsh of a penalty as possible," Cr Shields said.

The cafe will be cleaned up and reopened. Dubbo Regional Council will also look at boosting the cafe's security.
