A spate of poisonings traced back to 'Mouseoff', a bait that contains zinc phosphide, have left several in the Western NSW Local Health District hospitalised.

The bait in question is an industrial strength method of rodent control and the NSW EPA are urging residents to avoid using products of a similar strength within their homes, while an investigation is carried out regarding the supply of Mouseoff for domestic use.

"We're aware there's a mouse plague in many parts of the state however, a recent poisoning case serves as a warning that commercial or agricultural pesticides should not be used in a domestic setting," Ms Dwyer said.

"Our message to users is a simple one, follow the product instructions carefully."

"Before using any bait, it's vital that consumers check that their product is suitable for domestic use. We are very concerned about keeping the community safe and well."

The usage of rodent control baits and other products has seen a sharp uptick in recent weeks, following a combination of strong crop yields and heavy rain that have provided a perfect breeding ground for a 'plague' of mice.

Director of Western NSW Public Health Unit Priscilla Stanley has warned residents that the symptoms associated with exposure to phosphine gas can be severe.

"Phosphine gas released from mouse baits containing zinc phosphide can be dangerous," Ms Stanley said.

"It can cause suffocation in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces. Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, cough, shortness of breath and chest tightness".

Anyone who believes they are experiencing these symptoms should contact the Poison Information Centre on 13 11 26.

The EPA also urged customers to check the product label carefully before using any rodent or pest control measures and comply with the directions for use on the label.
