In January there were 26 stolen motor vehicles in the Orana Mid-Western Police District, along with 55 offences of steal from motor vehicle.
Orana Mid-Western Police District Crime Manager, Detective acting Inspector Mark Meredith said taking a few extra precautions with your car at home or when out and about could significantly lower the chances of this type of crime.
"Often this type of crime is opportunistic - should an offender walk by and see an open window or keys in the ignition, they feel it's an open invitation," he said.
"Steal from motor vehicle offences can often be prevented, or deterred at the least, through simple acts such as ensuring your vehicle is locked and secured; and by removing items that might tempt offenders including keys, mobile phones or wallets when the vehicle isn't in use."
