Emergency services were called to a house on Collins Avenue in Dubbo at 8.12am following reports that a house was well alight.
Fire crews arrived six minutes after the call, with police and ambulance also attending the scene.
Dubbo Fire and Rescue station officer Chris Cusack said when they arrived the occupants of the home had evacuated the house, however crews performed an all clear to make sure there was still no one inside the property.
"We are still investigating the cause of the fire, and police are investigating as well. At this time it is undetermined what caused it," officer Cusack said.
Officer Cusack said most of the house had been damaged by fire, heat and smoke.
"It's a good warning for everyone to check their smoke alarms and make sure they are working.
"This mother and her young kids were alerted to the fire because of their smoke alarms, and they were then able to evacuate the house."
Officer Cusack said Fire and Rescue staff were able to provide free home fire safety checks to residents, in order to help with any fire safety information residents might need. For more information contact 6884 7447.
