A group of Talbragar Street business owners have voted unanimously against the Talbragar Street Beautification project changes proposed by Dubbo Regional Council, currently on display for public submissions.
The plan includes planting more trees along Talbragar Street and a non-broken median strip.
Business owners said they would be happy with a modified version of the proposed median strip and are against the loss of several car spaces due to proposed tree plantation.
Talbragar Street business owner Peter Snare, from Snares Newsagency, said parking on the street is already a problem, especially for staff who work on the street.
"The biggest issue is the loss of parking spaces. Parking in Talbragar Street is already tough, particularly for those who work in this area," he said.
Mr Snare motioned towards the call for a multi-story car park to be built to service the street instead of the plantation of trees.
Harry's for Menswear owner Peter Sutton backed Mr Snare's notion.
"This is an opportunity for the council to look into a multi-story car park to service Talbragar Street," Mr Sutton said.
"I think we can all agree the loss of parking is detrimental to all businesses."
Dubbo Culinary and Homewares owner Kerryann George said the free parking spaces at the back of Talbragar Street businesses are full by 9am on a typical morning and those who start work at or after 9am already have to park in other locations.
Whitney's Jewellers owner Gina Brown said she has been made aware of multiple scenarios where colleagues have had to park in timed spaces and were.
The group agreed with the initial plan to construct a new multi-story car park at the vacant block on Talbragar Street adjacent to Victoria Park.
Dubbo Regional Council mayor Ben Shields said previously he had written a letter to Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders asking that he facilitate redevelopment of the old service station located on the corner of Talbragar and Darling Street into a public car park.
Mr Saunders told the Daily Liberal he is in talks with the Department of Transport.
Mr Snare said he believed the implementation of a median strip would also cause traffic congestion in Talbragar Street.
The group came to the consensus that a broken median strip would be better.
Feedback on the plan will be received by council up until close of business on Friday, January 15.
