Indigenous artists from anywhere around the country are encouraged to apply for the privilage of undertaking the artwork, with a grand prize of $85,000 on offer.
Part of the $13 million Destination Dubbo: International Ready project, the competition will see the top three artists received $5000 to develop their concept, and the winner will then get $10,000 to develop the design, a $55,000 artist fee and $20,000 prize money.
It's an exciting project that will again put Dubbo on the national map - if we need more help doing that at the moment.
Dubbo as a destination is thriving, with more and more people having no choice but to holiday in their own backyard.
So it's exciting to have a project such as this one come up on the radar.
The artwork will be made up of thousands of small plates that will subtly move in the wind, adding innovation and energy to the piece.
Council's cultural development coordinator Jessica Moore said they were looking for the artists to really embrace the opportunity of the moving parts.
"How would you make the best use of the opportunity? How would you make something that can move and shimmer and grab the eye?"
As part of the Destination Dubbo project, the development of the Old Dubbo Gaol precinct hopes to reclaim the original footprint of the area, while celebrating the city's Indigenous and colonial history.
It will be great to see something that ties this vision into the works.
We are keen to see what designs are chosen along the way and what will be chosen for the final piece ... bring on 2022 for the completed work.
