Jarryn Powyer pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm when he faced Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday.

According to police facts tendered in cour t, the 27-year-old former captain-coach was drinking at the Castlereagh Hotel when he headbutted a fellow player outside on August 29.

Mr Powyer's defence lawyer Jai Silkman told the court he had acted violently after he saw his partner, who he'd believed was at home, walking out on the street with the other man.

"He certainly takes responsibility for what he has done and the seriousness of it," Mr Silkman said.

"He completely accepts the way he reacted was wrong.

"He's at a loss to explain why he reacted the way he did ... it's another example of alcohol-fuelled violence."

The incident was reported to police a day after the assault. Another local football player, provided a statement to police having witnessed the assault.

Mr Silkman told the court a conviction would be potentially detrimental to Mr Powyer's employment as a "highly respected" school teacher in Dubbo.

"He tells me he's had four sessions of counselling and wishes to continue with that after today," Mr Silkman said.

"It would be very unlikely my client would be back before the court.

"He's immediately stepped down from his position at the football club."

Magistrate Gary Wilson said Mr Powyer was a role model within the community who was highly spoken of.

"It's totally out of character and something you never would have reverted to in the past," magistrate Wilson said.

"You've had lots of contribution to the community, and in your employment you are held in high esteem, then you go and bring it all crashing down for a stupid act of violence like this."

Mr Powyer was given a nine-month conditional release order meaning he'll have to stay out of trouble the duration of it, and no conviction was reordered.

"You only get one of these once, let me tell you that," magistrate Wilson told Powyer.
