Mitchell was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in January. An ultrasound identified a large tumour in the young boy's stomach, with metastases in the lung, lymph node and bone.
In August, Mitchell's doctors told the family he would have months to live.
For the past month, the Rotary Club of South Dubbo has been renovating the family home for his return. He was due to return back on Tuesday, however, Mitchell's health will most likely prevent that.
In an update on Mitchell shared via the Mitchell Blasts Neuroblastoma Facebook page, his mother Erin said her son was taken back to Westmead via ambulance on Sunday morning.
It came after a chest x-ray which looked "worse than the last one at the start of the week". Mitchell was also found to be anemic and the lymph nodes in his neck were enlarged.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"They're treating for infection and sepsis, but Jeremy and I also start to wonder if this is the cancer progressing," Mrs Ray wrote.
"We have been told to expect that it will progress, but are praying that now is not the time."
Mitchell's parents and youngest sibling Connor have all gone to Sydney to be with him, while sister Hannah will stay behind.
The Dubbo community was quick to offer their thoughts and prayers for the family after hearing the news.
The working bee at the west Dubbo home continued at the weekend.
The rotary club, supporters and local businesses have worked hard to make improvements to the home for the Ray family's return.
