Pet owners warned of potential dangers of looming heatwave
With a severe heatwave set to sweep NSW over the weekend, Greencross Vets and Petbarn are urging pet owners to keep vigilant. Greencross Vets Chief Veterinary Office Dr Magdoline Awad said heat stroke, dehydration, ticks, and heat-damaged paws are some of the main dangers to look out for.

Dr Awad's simple steps to a pet-friendly summer are as follows;
- Keep an eye on their water bowl, your pet will drink more than usual. Seek vet advice if their drinking is excessive.
- On an extremely hot day, you can put crushed ice in their bowl to help cool them down.
- Most cats really like running water, so a water fountain may be a good idea to keep them hydrated
- Bring a bottle of water with you on trips.
- If your home gets very hot in the middle of the day, consider leaving the air-conditioning on for your cat, or at least a fan
- Walk your dog early and watch out for hot surfaces - if a pavement is too hot when you put your hand on it, it's too hot for your dog's feet.
- Watch out for nasties, snakes come out of hibernation.
- Ensure your pet is vaccinated against infectious diseases such as parvovirus, which we generally see more of in warm, humid/ wet weather.
- Never ever leave a pet unattended in a car, cars can heat up in a matter of minutes
