Obi, the limber and quick-footed Zebra foal, is the latest birth at the zoo as a result of the breeding program, and has wasted no time in showing off his speed and energy.

Named for the word 'heart' in the Nigerian dialect of Igbo, Obi is the latest of seven foals to be born from mother Kioni.

Keeper Carolene Magner said she was a little overwhelmed to arrive at work last Sunday and find the new arrival amidst her charges.

"When you're actively awaiting the birth of a new baby, it seems to take forever," Ms Magner said.

"You do definitely feel this amazing, overwhelming joy, so there might have been a little bit of a tear."

The average gestation period for a zebra foal is a little over a year, with most births occurring between 12 and 13 months, with Obi being discovered by Ms Magner early on Sunday morning.

While he's already comfortable showing off his speed and grace, the young foal will stay close by to his mother's side for the immediate future.

"We are very happy with how he is progressing over his first week and look forward to watching him grow and develop, and eventually interacting with the other herd members," Ms Magner said.

Ms Magner advised those hoping to see Obi to come early on in the day to catch a good look.

"Mornings are a great time to see Obi as he is most active then,and like most newborns will have a burst of energy and then take a nap."
