That's the question Dubbo Regional Council is asking the community on Thursday for the Water Night challenge.

Between 5pm and 5am, households are encouraged to avoid turning on the shower or taps for the night. Instead, the goal is to use a single bucket of water.

It's part of National Water Week which runs from October 19 to 25. This year's theme is Be Wise With Our Water.

Dubbo mayor Ben Shields said, even though rain has brought relief to the drought-ravaged Central West it was important not to take for granted our precious water.

"We are coming out of one of the worst droughts on record where the level of Burrendong Dam dropped from 130 per cent to just 1.5 per cent in three years. It is great to see that the level is now back up to 46.1 per cent but it is important we don't take it for granted," Cr Shields.

"Council is undertaking a number of initiatives to improve the region's water security and make us more water efficient to ensure we don't find ourselves in a similar position when the next drought inevitably occurs.

"These include the cross-city pipeline, new bores, recycled effluent, investigation into stormwater retention and the installation of smart water meters to increase the awareness of residents."

Installation of more than five kilometres of the cross-city pipeline has now been completed, which will boost the city's water security during times of drought.

Council is also running a colouring in competition. Entries can be picked up from the Dubbo council building or downloaded from the website.
