They grew up with the blockbuster trilogy and in the decades since have gradually built a collection that includes Darth Vader, storm trooper and imperial guard outfits.

The pair treated fellow Star Wars fans to a unique experience at the Dubbo Westview Drive-In screenings of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi earlier this month.

Rodney dressed up as Darth Vader, his favourite character, while his brother was a storm trooper and daughter Jessica was unrecognisable in the imperial guard costume.

Tony's Holden ute, vinyl-wrapped with Star Wars images, was also an eye-catching sight.

Rodney said they had first donned Star Wars gear for a fundraiser many years ago, and the interest grew from there.

He said they got a kick out of seeing the response from people, whether they were aged eight or 80 years.

"It's good, we get to put smiles on people's faces, they get to see something different, and it's just a bit of fun," he said.

Last year their dedication was rewarded with recognition.

"We were lucky enough to win one of the Deni Ute Muster [awards] last year, which was pretty good, for the best themed ute," Rodney said.

The movies continue at Dubbo Westview Drive-In, which will celebrates its 50^th anniversary with a big weekend of screenings.

A sell-out Running on Empty event on Saturday night has prompted organisers to announce a Friday night session, and classic musical Grease will light up the big screen on Sunday night.

The drive-in has movies planned for mid-week and weekends in the school holidays, and more details are available on its website.
