Emergency services were called to a house fire on Alexandra Street in Parkes at 7.56pm on Thursday with the property well alight when they arrived on scene.

Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Mark McKay said luckily nobody was home when the blaze ignited, but the family's dog was there.

"There were people who rented the premises and they were out, but they returned to find their house on fire," he said.

"The house began collapsing and even though they'd contained it [the fire], the house kept collapsing."

After more than an hour of battling the blaze Inspector McKay said firefighters were shocked to see a dog escaping the flames.

"To the surprise of the firefighters a dog emerged from under the house, it'd been at least 1.5 hours since the fire started," he said.

"They gave it a drink and they checked its snout and paws and it was all OK.

"They handed it over to the police and they were going to reunite it with its owner."

Inspector McKay said when firefighters arrived on scene that they worked hard to prevent the flames from impacting neighbouring properties.

"They made sure the fire didn't spread to the house nextdoor," he said.

"There was a gas leak because of the collapse so the gas company came in and turned off the gas."

The cause of the fire is not suspicious and firefighters believe it may have ignited in the bedroom, however police are investigating.

A HOUSE has been destroyed by fire following an overnight blaze in Parkes.

Fire, paramedic and police crews were called to a home on Alexandra Street at 7.56pm on Thursday following reports of a property on fire.

"On arrival, crews were confronted with a home fully involved in fire," Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Parkes said.

"Crews in breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the fire.

"The residents' dog was found a short time later and after a quick check over by our crew, the dog was handed to police."

Firefighters from Dubbo were also called to the scene to re-stock oxygen cylinders to allow on-scene firefighters to keep battling the blaze.

At this stage the cause of the fire and any injuries received to occupants is unknown.
