Council has been looking into the idea of hosting an NRL match between 2021 and 2023 as a way to stimulate the economy.

The estimated cost is $568,000. It includes $300,000 for the appearance fees; $69,300 for accommodation, meals and travel; plus $199,300 for the event delivery, including site preparation and traffic management plans.

However, the event could bring between $700,000 and $900,000 to Dubbo.

In a report to council on the proposal, manager regional events Kim Hague says the NRL match could draw between 7000 and 11,000 people to the city.

Council has also started making contact with clubs for an indication of their interest.

Ms Hague said the Cronulla Sharks and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs have both responded positively.

Meanwhile, the South Sydney Rabbitohs are considering new contracts for 2022.

"In addition, in mid-June council staff have been in contact with NRL senior manager, government relations who is assisting council with information, club contacts and has been involved in the discussions with the deputy premier's office regarding NRL games in the region," Ms Hague said.

"It is understood that the Charity Shield match between St George Illawarra and South Sydney is contracted until 2021 and there may be an opportunity for council to bid for the next three year contract from 2022."

The issue is on the agenda for discussion at the council meeting on Monday night.

Council has recommended spending no more than $370,100 on attracting the match.

When the idea was first raised, mayor Ben Shields said he had been wary of the cost involved in bringing a game to Dubbo in the past but the current climate had him now warming to the idea.

"I've always been hesitant to spend a lot of money getting the NRL to Dubbo because in a good year our motels and shops and restaurants have been doing well," he said.

"But going into a potential recession and economic downturn this is the year we do need it. We need to have an event in Dubbo to attract people to the region."
