Gulgong trainer Brett Thompson's aim of fielding Kookabaa in the Dubbo Cup Sprint Prelude might have taken the best possible kind of hit after storming home to secure a tangled win in Canterbury on Wednesday.

Kookabaa entered the 1100m stretch at Canterbury as a $31 underdog, but was able to best the favourite, James Cumming's Zakat, along with four other horses in a tangled, five-way finish.

Ragged Rascal, Bucking Beauty and Lancaster Bomber all also crossed the line within a fraction of a length of each other, but it was Thompson's six-year-old gelding that got the nod.
Kookabaa joined Bucking Beauty on the outside and came home strong in the last stretch after jumping from the seventh barrier, with the gelding holding onto the slight lead and saw off their competitors with a desperate dash to the finish line.
The strong finisher is now riding a hot streak, with four out of their last five being victories as well as a second place in Dubbo in June.
