The Spurs have been left at the bottom of the competition ladder following consecutive losses to Panorama FC and Macquarie United, but Tongue is confident the wins will start to flow once a little luck flows their way.

"Obviously we've got to be confident going into the game, we've probably got to forget about the last few games and focus on getting back to playing good football," Tongue said.

"We've got the squad there that we need, everyone's playing well, we just haven't had that little bit of extra luck, the old soccer gods haven't quite bounced our way."

Spurs are no stranger to being on the backfoot, having made a habit of starting slow in the Dubbo football competition and coming close to upsetting the Bulls in last year's grand final, but that approach holds certain dangers this year due to the shorter season.

"I guess if you look back at our history, we've always sort of come from behind, we do have a knack for getting our act together towards the end of the season, but this time we're going to have to get going sooner rather than later with this being a shorter season," Tongue said.

Less time to prepare and the adjustments necessary for new players to find their groove have both worked against Tongue's Spurs side this year, but he says there's 'no excuses' and the structure of the team is looking 'well set' ahead of this weekend's clash.

"I'm fairly confident we've got our run of three games coming up, so hopefully we can string together our consistency and score some goals," Tongue said.

"Everyone's been playing fairly good football and now that we've got a little bit of match fitness, we're coming together a lot better, the spirit's definitely there right now, they don't have their heads down over a few losses."

"We've just got to work on our gameplan and get some consistency, everyone on the squad, all the way through our starting eleven and beyond has been performing really well."

While the washed out fields at home haven't been much use for training this week, Tongue's got a good feeling about the squad's fitness now that they have a few games under their belt.

"There's been no chances for pitch training this week at all, the guys have been road-running to keep their core fitness up, that's just something everyone needs to manage and work toward their best."

The travel bug has also bitten, with the Spurs facing a sharp turnaround last week after meeting Bathurst on Saturday night before returning home for a match on Sunday.

"All the boys were carrying niggling things here and there, but I was impressed by the way they played Sunday night even with that going on, that was the best team game we've had this year, I don't think the score-line really reflected the way we played, but you have to give credit to Macquarie there, they've got a great striker up front who'll punish you for any mistake you make," Tongue said.

The Orana Spurs meet the Barnstoneworth United FC on Saturday at 4.30pm in Dubbo.
