Police were called to the Canobolas Rural Technology High School at 2pm on Wednesday following a fight between two students, where a boy is alleged to have stabbed another student with an unidentified object.
Staff and students intervened, and police say the young alleged offender left the school shortly after.
The injured boy's wounds are non-life threatening, but he received medial assistance at the school before being transferred to Orange Hospital where he required surgery to repair a puncture to his chest.
Both students are from Orange but it's not known if they attend Canobolas Rural Technology High School.
Afterwards, another fight erupted at the school at which time police officers attended and were able to defuse the situation.
Staff and students spoken to have confirmed there's been prior issues between the two parties leading to the altercation.
- Central West Police District inspector Dave Harvey
Central West Police District inspector Dave Harvey said there was a history between the two students.
"Various staff and students spoken to have confirmed there's been prior issues between the two parties leading to the altercation," he said.
He added Orange detectives will continue their investigations on Thursday, but no charges had yet been laid.
Inspector Harvey said detectives were liaising with the school principal and staff to manage any ongoing conflict between both parties.
The Department of Education and Training has been contacted, and ACM are awaiting a response.
On the Canobolas High Facebook page overnight, the school said one of its students had been injured in an incident on school grounds but because the police were involved it would provide no further comment.
"An injury occurred during an incident involving an outsider coming onto school grounds," the post read.
"Staff managed the incident well until police arrived to provide support. As the matter is under police investigation, no further comments can be provided at this time."
