A MAN has been remanded in custody after being found allegedly in possession of a shortened firearm and prohibited drugs during a vehicle stop.

About 10.30pm on Thursday, police stopped and spoke with the occupants of a Western Australian-registered Jeep four-wheel-drive on the Barrier Highway at Cobar.
The driver, a 37-year-old man from Spencer Park in Western Australia, was subjected to a random drug test, which allegedly returned a positive reading for methylamphetamine.
He was placed under arrest and a further search of the vehicle revealed a quantity of methylamphetamine, buprenophrine, cannabis and cash.
Police also allegedly located a loaded, shortened .243 calibre rifle fitted with a silencer in the vehicle along with ammunition.
The man was taken to Cobar Police Station where he was charged with possess shortened firearm, possess unauthorised firearm, receive property stolen outside NSW, not keep firearm safe, possess ammunition without a licence, possess prohibited drug (three counts) and supply prohibited drug.
The man was refused bail and appear at Bourke Local Court on Friday, where he was formally refused bail, to appear at the same court on Monday.
A female passenger in the car, an 18-year-old woman, was charged with possess prohibited drug (two counts). She will appear at Cobar Local Court in August.
