Emergency services were called to a home on Wingadee Street in Coonamble at 5.30am on Thursday following reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Anthony Hojel said there were flames coming from a bedroom at the front of the house when crews arrived.

"The resident was asleep on the other side of the house when it happened," he said.

"The carbon monoxide in smoke can put you into a deeper sleep, he was very lucky.

"When you're asleep your sense of smell doesn't work as well and that's why we recommend a smoke alarm because you're sense of hearing still works."

Inspector Hojel said Fire and Rescue NSW crews along with NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers extinguished the fire quickly.

"It was contained to that one bedroom and we were able to prevent it from spreading through the house," he said.

"There was smoke and heat damage to some parts of the house."

NSW RFS Inspector Jillian Butler said Coonamble Headquarters Brigade brought its 10,000 litre bulk water tanker to the scene to allow firefighters to extinguish the blaze quicker.

Police and paramedics were also called to the scene and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
