That's why the Cantebury Bulldogs coach has called on the clubs to provide some clarity.
A visibly dejected Pay watched on during Saturday's loss to the Broncos, one which ensures the Bulldogs have made thier worst start to a season since 1964.
The Dogs have won once in the opening nine rounds and while the performance of English recruit Luke Thompson was one positive on Saturday the Bulldogs were overrun in the second half against a Broncos side which has been dealing with its own run of losses.
There's been plenty calling for Pay's head and the former CYMS coach wants to know what the future holds one way or another.
"That's up to them (but) it would be useful for everyone," he said of his role and the board when speaking after the loss.
The Bulldogs, who lost Jayden Okunbor and Corey Harawira-Naera after their pre-season off-field incident at Port Macquarie, were without the injured Adam Elliott, Joe Stimson and Will Hopoate on Saturday.
Thompson was a bright spot on debut but the quality was lacking and Pay knows it needs to be improved as the salary cap stress at the club finally starts to ease.
"We can go out into the market and look to bolster our recruitment," he said.
"We have got some real positive signs coming soon. It is very hard for everyone at the moment but we will move forward and will get better."
