Just Won More ($8.50), trained by Josh Turnbull, was lucky the race didn't end a few metres earlier as he brought down Barry Lew's Karloo Bradley ($5, Mat Rue) by a half head.
The disappointing performances of best-backed runners Ally Rogan ($2.20 favourite, Doug Hewitt) and Happychappyshannon ($3.50, Travis Bullock) paved the way for the race's next two top-supported horses to go head-to-head at the finish.
Karloo Bradley got away strongly from gate five to take up the running ahead of several fast-starting runners to his inside.
Turnbull found some space from the back row to give Just Won More a place four back on the outside line.
He hit the 'go' button on Just Won More with 500m to run and began a three wide move, but was forced further out on the track when Doug Hewitt attempted to shift Ally Rogan out for the sprint home.
However, the favourite went into a gallop and cleared the way for Just Won More to save valuable ground.
Meanwhile out in front, Karloo Bradley had found a break over the rest of the pack but he had a charging challenger on the move.
Just Won More got the edge right on the finishing line to pick up career win number seven.
Tim McGee ($18, Anthony Frisby) was third.
