Taronga Conservation Society Australia director Cameron Kerr said the design and craftsmanship of the Waterhole is great.
"There are some really nice and subtle design features."
The Waterhole is situated at the halfway point of the zoo circuit overlooking a herd of species including the blackbut and zebra.
Mr Kerr said he would like to recognise the Waterhole is situated on Wiradjuri land.
"And what beautiful land it is," he said.
What's really exciting about the Waterhole is that it tells the story of the land that we all know so well. One of drought and then flooding rains...

"The Waterhole is a real milestone for Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
"It's a great opportunity for families to have a break and enjoy a coffee and I know the water play area here will be very popular in summer and spring.
"It's a fantastic new addition to Taronga Western Plains Zoo and is now a must-do for visitors when on safari in Dubbo.
"But what's really exciting about the Waterhole is that it tells the story of the land that we all know so well. One of drought and then flooding rains.
"It tells the story of how the land can go from being so dry to bouncing back."
NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean said the official opening of the Waterhole focused on taking Australia's best regional tourism opportunity to the next level.
"The Waterhole creates an opportunity for kids to have a play in the water play area while also being able to admire the meerkats, and for the parents, it's an opportunity to experience a wine in the wild."
Mr Kean said he is really proud of this new precinct and is sure it will be a popular space for those visiting the zoo.
"Visitors will definitely notice these changes and be inspired by the stories of conservation and wildlife each new precinct shares."
Taronga Western Plains Zoo director Steve Hinks said the project was a long time coming and it couldn't have been done without the help of David Payne Constructions.
"The result is fantastic," Mr Hinks said.
Mr Hinks was joined by Mr Kean, Mr Kerr and Member for Dubbo Dugald Saunders on Tuesday to cut the ribbon.
