Minister for Local Government Shelley Hancock made the announcement on Friday.
It follows the planned 2020 elections being postponed back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In making the announcement Ms Hancock said the current councillors would continue to hold their civic offices until the rescheduled elections.
An order was published in Friday's Government Gazette formally postponing the elections for 12 months, with a second order extending the postponement and setting the new election date to be published shortly.
The announcement was welcomed by Local Government NSW president Linda Scott who said it will bring certainty for local communities and allow councils time to prepare.
The postponement will not affect subsequent elections, which means at this stage elections in 2024 will continue.
