Due to uncertainties around public gatherings, the Dubbo Stampede is holding a virtual event. All the usual races are still available, but this year, participants can complete them from anywhere around the world.
It's already proving popular. New president Andrew McKay said there were about 100 registrations in the first 24 hours.
"It's been really well received and I think everyone is really appreciating that we just didn't can it and say 'we'll do it next year'. We've actually tried to get some momentum going," he said.
Because there's currently not a fixed location for the event, Mr McKay said he was very interested to see where everyone completed their run from.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"You don't have to be in Dubbo, you could run around Gulargambone, Coonabarabran, the Gold Coast, anything," Mr McKay said.
"At least it might give some people an incentive to do some training and get out on the day. If you sign up it's a good way to stay fit but it's also good for your mental health as well."
While Plan A is for a virtual event, Mr McKay said depending what restrictions were in place in August and whether Taronga Western Plains Zoo was open, some part of the event might still be held in person.
He said it wouldn't be the full event but could include a barbecue for participants and the presentation of the medals.
Mr McKay and the vice president Katie Lyons are both new to their committee roles. The secretary and treasurer have remained the same.
"At the moment we're doing our committee meetings via Zoom which is quite interesting," Mr McKay said.
"Everyone is looking forward to catching up again because even though we're a committee we're quite good friends as well. It is a logistical challenge and to see the Stampede come together is quite amazing."
This is the ninth year the Dubbo Stampede has been held.
Mr McKay said it was important to the committee to keep the momentum going ahead of the milestone year.
"I think one of the things I'm looking forward to is next year when we can get back to what we would consider normal. But we don't know what that is," he said.
The virtual event will be held on August 30.
Registrations for all races are $20. Groups of four or more will receive a $5 discount for each person who registers.
Each participant will still receive a medal, however there will be no prize money for the race winners.
