A gun safe has been opened and three rifles and ammunition stolen from a home in Wellington, with police now calling for public assistance.

Police have been told the incident occurred sometime between 8.30pm on Tuesday and 9am on Wednesday.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District attended the home and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic police.
