Staggs was speaking about the experience during a 'Freddy's Facetime' segment with Brad Fittler on Channel Nine this week.
Staggs had never met his father prior to last year and as a child growing up in Wellington he had received a huge amount of support from his grandmother, Dawn.
But after getting the chance to represent Tonga and his father's heritage and then visit the Pacific island last year, Staggs reached out.

"I didn't know I was going to meet him the day I flew in, but we flew in about three o'clock in the morning and I just got off the plane to get my bags and my dad was there waiting for me," Staggs told the NSW Origin coach.
"At the time it didn't really sink in but I just took a look at him and we stared at each other for a bit, and eventually made our way together and hugged each other for a while.
"It was a big part of my life growing up, not having a father. Seeing him for the first time, it was like a missing puzzle that's come back together.
"To meet my father for the first time was something special and something I always wanted to do, one of the best times of my life."
Staggs appeared on the segment with new housemate and Broncos teammate Jake Turpin.
The pair spoke about how they've been keeping busy in isolation, with some renovations and landscaping work at the house keeping them active while there's been fitness sessions as well as they prepare for the planned NRL return on May 28.
"We've been doing what we can to keep fit," Staggs said.
"We just had a long pre-season and it's the toughest trainin you'll ever do so we don't want to fall behind from that.
"We've been keeping up a bit of fitness and some home gym work ... I reckon when the game is back, whenever that is, we'll be ready to take the field and keep going."
The young Broncos had impressed prior to the season being shut down, having won two-from-two to start the season.
They're scheduled to play fellow unbeaten side Parramatta in round three.
