The closure of the shelter follows a string of other Council-run facilities in an attempt to help keep staff and customers safe.
DRC spokesperson for COVID-19 response, Andrew Parsons, says while most pets will be going to rescue groups, any cats for adoption will be going to the RSPCA for re-homing."
Meanwhile, people will still be able to retrieve their lost or stray pets by strict appointment only, which will be allocated in 30 minute intervals.
"As the public would understand, we're trying to minimise face-to-face contact, so if you are late or a no-show, you will need to reschedule, and we hope the community understands why we need to do this," Mr Parsons said.
"We're also encouraging people to place surrendered animals in the overnight pens, as rangers may not be able to attend in person."
Mr Parsons said staff at the Animal Shelter will still be available for people to speak to over the phone.
You can call the shelter on 6801 4640.
