Karen James took to social media to suggest that people craft their own poppies and wreaths and display them prominently on their front door after the RSL governing body announced it would not go ahead with planned ANZAC Day ceremonies.
The measure was taken in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
"Last year, I crocheted a poppy for Remembrance Day and I really like arts and craft and stuff like that, so I was thinking of what would be a way for people to see each other acknowledging the day and that idea came back to me," Ms James said.
Ms James says several schools are already on board to make poppies for the effort and people are using the hashtag 'SupportANZAC' to share ideas on ways to make their own wreaths.
"I've heard from a couple of schools already that they're going to try and get their kids to craft some up as a way to make some, so that's really exciting to see the kids getting involved in it all," Ms James said.
"I've used the hashtag a bit to put some ideas up that people can check out, there's a lot of different, creative ways you can make something to show your support and there's a lot of easy ways to do it too."
Ms James said she believed it was important to show support even when times make it difficult because of how important the ANZAC Day celebrations usually are to returned service men and women.
"I imagine a lot of the soldiers who've served, it's a very important day and not just to be acknowledged but to meet with others and see that the community respects them, so being able to show at least some support, I think, is necessary," Ms James said.
"When I saw they'd been cancelled, it just seemed like the ultimate blow, it hit so much harder than other events that have been cancelled."
