The pair's impressive start with Fremantle continued into the Community Series against a disappointing Carlton on Saturday.

They were key figures in the Dockers' strong start and 13.12 (90) to 5.13 (43) win over the Blues at David Grays Arena in Mandurah.

The Dockers game plan centred around short passing and marking. They took 46 more marks than the Blues.

Aish, who played in Collingwood's preliminary final loss last season, set the tone early. He had 13 touches in the first half, eight of them contested.

With Nat Fyfe missing, he also took control of stoppages, with five clearances for the half and six for the game.

He was swung to half-back late in the game when Justin Longmuir started moving his players around.

Acres, a former Saint, was a cog in the move of Bradley Hill and didn't look too bad in the No.9 jumper on the wing.

He led all-comers with 31 possessions.

Of the youngsters, Caleb Serong continues to push for a round-one debut, with 14 touches; 11 of them contested.

Lachie Schultz also made the most of his chances, kicking four goals, while Rory Lobb looks ready for the season proper now.

Longmuir thought they took a solid step towards round-one (v Essendon on March 21) and would go in stronger against West Coast next week.

"Like I said to the players after the game, it's all about taking a step forward for round one and that's all it was," he said.

"I thought we took a step forward fitness-wise on last week with our intra-club. I thought we looked a bit sharper with the footy today.

"We will get Fyfe and (Michael) Walters and Stephen Hill back next week. We will go a little bit stronger."

Not as many Blues seemed to have round one in their sites yet though.

Rising Star Sam Walsh picked up where he left off in 2019, collecting 28 touches.

Former Gold Coast Sun Jack Martin impressed in his first game. He played only the first half, kicked his side's first goal and had nine touches and five tackles.

With Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay and Mitch McGovern missing, the Blues didn't look great in attack.

Carlton assistant coach Brent Stanton said his side struggled to match Fremantle's desperation.

"I wouldn't say we were disappointed," he said.

"They came with a real hunger and desperation and that showed out in the first quarter.

"It was a great learning for our players, especially after 10 days ago we had a good outing against Collingwood.

"It's a factor of the group that we have, that they have to learn to ride the ups and downs."

Despite the result, Carlton would leave WA happy after captain Sam Docherty made a successful return after two seasons on the sidelines due to two knee reconstructions.
