Clean Up Australia Day began 30 years ago as a way to gather people together to clean up and preserve the environment.

This year, volunteers can join the Dubbo Rivercare group, Rotary Club of South Dubbo and Dubbo Regional Council to clean up the city. Anyone taking part is asked to meet at Ollie Robbins Oval from 8.30am to register.

From there, volunteers can head off in teams to collect litter at the riverbank ovals, netball courts and along the Tracker Riley Walkway.

Dubbo Rivercare will be coordinating a Macquarie River clean up from 8.30am from the Church Street boat ramp.

A spokesperson for Dubbo Rivercare said cleaning up the river would improve fish, turtle and platypus aquatic habitats.

"Dubbo residents who treasure and frequent the river will be no stranger to the distressing array of shopping trolleys, discarded bikes, food, coffee and other plastic containers that should never be dumped in the river," the spokesperson said.

"Please help clean up and reverse the major impact waste has on our environment and our plants and animals."

In Wellington, Western Paddlers and the Wellington Progress and Action group is seeking volunteers to work along the Macquarie and Bell Rivers including Duke of Wellington Bridge (low level) area, John Oxley Park and Thornton Street boat ramp. Registration will be 8.30am at John Oxley Park.

Council's manager operations Craig Arms said Clean Up Australia Day had become an important national event that allowed communities to get involved and make a difference.

Litter collected on the day will be collected by council. Special bins will also be provided for waste segregation.

Council encourages volunteers to wear sturdy shoes, a broad brimmed hat, sunscreen and gloves and carry some water.

The Clontarf Foundation will be assisting council with a barbecue for volunteers from 11am at Ollie Robins Oval.
