Mat Rue's got a high opinion of his horse Authoritative, and following Wednesday night's latest win it's not hard to see why.
Authoritative ($1.25 favourite) was sent out at super short odds for the Cobbity Equine Pace (1,730 metres) and more than justified the price by blitzing the competition in a 1:55.8 mile rate.
Rue might have needed binoculars to see the rest of the field if he turned around at the winning post, with placegetters Hall Star ($8.50, Amanda Turnbull) and Star Mara ($8.50, Steve Turnbull) finishing more than 23 metres behind.
The four-year-old scored the first win of his preparation with a scorching leading run, breaking away from the field with ease on the turn for home and closing the race out with a 27.7 final quarter.
The gelding with a striking blaze has a glowing race record to match.
Authoritative has now won three of his five starts and in the two races he missed out on a victory he still finished within three metres of the winner.
The scary part is that Rue thinks there's much more better things to come from the Grinfromeartoear gelding.
"It's not very fast out here tonight. There's a nice bit of moisture on the track and they're getting their toe in and there was a headwind down the back," he said.
"I thought he'd win tonight but I didn't think he'd win as comfortably as that. Leading's not his forte and he can let you down sometimes when he's in front. We thought we'd do it and that was a great win tonight.
"I don't think he was concentrating much on those last two furlongs either. He might be up for a short let up soon but that will only make him better."
Authoritative was a Rewards Series Final winner at Blayney last prearation before he took a brief two month stint away from the track.
Rue and Bernie Hewitt each scored winning doubles at Wednesday's meeting.
Joes Joy was a close winner for Rue over Yes You May in the final event while Hewitt was victorious with The Mustang and Beta Jewel.
